    Blended Families In The 1970's

The main social issue the Brady Bunch really tackled was the idea of blended families after a divorce. While the show may have focused on Carol and Mike Brady bringing their six children together, it was inspired by a statistic in The Los Angeles Times that 30% of marriages in the US at the time had a child from a previous marriage (Merritt). Mike Brady “was one of TV’s first stepfathers, and his blended family of six kids was a far cry from mom, dad, 2.5 kids and a dog” (Goudreau). Modern Family also tackles the issue of divorces and blended families but with its own twist. The family’s patriarch, Jay Pritchett, remarries despite the fact that his children from his first marriage are grown. Except instead of the family blending together seamlessly as the Bradys do, they struggle with the fact that Jay’s new wife is the same age as his own children and his new step son is the age of his grandchildren. Modern Family also showcases many other modern day issues, such as biracial couples, as Jay’s second wife is Colombian, and homosexual couples in Jay’s son, Mitchell, and his husband Cameron. Modern Family reflects many of the social movements of the current day. As feminism builds, TV moms have began “overshadowing TV dads, who [play] the part of the well-meaning idiot” (Goudreau). With the way TV explores social trends in society, “there's a family for just about everyone on TV today”

Overview of the Family in the Mockumentary: Modern Family

The average family: a married man and women, 2.5 children, with a beautiful home that has a white picket fence and a dog. However, this “average” family image has changed drastically over the past decade particularly with the acceptance of gay marriage and green cards that are easier to obtain; this has had a substantial influence not only on our society but leverage on social media. An example of this changed media dynamic is displayed through the comedic mockumentary, Modern Family. Within this fictional, interview style comedy series, three families that are extremely stereotypical, live their interrelated lives. The series follows these three families, an “average” American family featuring a married man, Phil, and women, Claire, who have three children, a gay couple, Mitchell and Cameron, who adopted a child and an older man, Jay, that is Claire and Mitchell’s father, married to a hot young Columbian women who also have a son. Modern Family, which is given a reality-style, has cameras following around each stereotypical family, portraying a very dynamic interrelation.

Familial Structures in Portrayed in Media

Over the course of the past 50 years, society has made many progressive changes about family structure from the perfect, cookie cutter family with a successful husband and a trophy wife to the introduction of a family with multiple members living in one house. Societal changes along with melting pot culture have reshaped the definition of “family” and represent the diverse households in America. Today, TV shows depict single fathers raising an entire household, same-sex couples attempting to share responsibilities, and traditional families striving to blend into culture. When it comes to portraying evolving family dynamics, TV shows such as Full House, Modern Family, and Pavitra Rishta illustrate the difference in familial structures from the 1990’s to present day and how the different relationships built and nurtured affected the characters.

    Essay On Ideal Family Structure

Having the European American middle-class family as the ideal family structure in the United States is a problem. It creates a problem because it exposes individuals to live up to a certain family structure. Not everyone in society can live up to the status of a white middle class family, who can afford different types of luxuries. It is problematic because it portrays an image of family that is not reality for other families because of homosexuality, economics, culture, co-residence, marriage, and gender roles. These characteristics distinguish families from one another, making the

Although the families themselves may not directly relate to their audience, the plot does, and that is what makes these shows so successful. In addition, there are parallels in the television series to real life, making it easier for the audience to relate to. One example of this is that in the first season, Jay, along with many other family members, was not very accepting of Mitchell’s homosexuality and his relationship with Cam; however, in the newest season, the characters are more supportive of their sexuality and relationship. This change symbolizes society’s increasing tolerance to gay couples, even though gays still undergo many struggles. Additionally, both shows feature families that display sound family values who rally to overcome various situations and are then able to look back and laugh about it (Feiler ST.1).

To Kill A Mockingbird Identity Analysis

I often have a difficult time describing my situation to others, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. Three divorces have taught me what successful and not so successful relationships look like. My younger sister with autism has taught me empathy, compassion, and patience. My step siblings have been there for me when did not have to be and for that I am grateful. No matter the family situation, every family has an undeniable sense of pride. For example, my family, most of whom were born in Ireland, throw the loudest St. Patrick’s day parties and keep our Irish flags up all through March. We are proud of our incredibly fair skin and abundance of freckles and redheads. My family’s pride is similar to that of Aunt Alexandra’s and her obsession with heredity and the certain “family streaks” in the novel’s Maycomb county. Scout mentions said streaks in chapter 13. “Everybody in Maycomb, it seemed, had a streak: a drinking streak, a gambling streak, a mean streak, a funny streak,” (Lee 129). I again feel Scout and I could relate to each other through our unique family situations, hers of course being her family’s cook Calpurnia and her neighbor Miss Maudie as her mother figures. Another unique family are the Pritchett’s on the show Modern Family. I was elated when this show came out because, while dramatized for comedic effect, it is a break from the straight, white, “we all get along fine” families usually depicted on TV.

    American Families

What is the American Family ? In this day and age many external forces contribute to the structure of a family but there is a basic structure that most families follow. The Nuclear Family was for the longest time, and still is the most common structure of families. This structure is made up of a two parent, a mother and father, household with children and maybe a close relative. Due to the increased divorce rate, a new family structure that is growing in popularity is the blended family. This family structure consists of a one or two parent household with children, potentially step children and close relatives. Because of the increase immigration rate and the tightening of the economy, the extended family has become more prominent in society. This family structure consists of two parents, children, grandma, grandpa, and/or other relatives. Also rising in popularity is same-sex partners adopting children and having a family; interracial and interreligious marriages are also becoming popular. The roles of parents in a family are to be the breadwinners and raise their children in such a way that they will become prosperous members of society (Duda 12-23).

    Model Family Essay

The concept of family has change a lot over the past decides. Not only this, but the notions of family are very different depending on the countries, but the idea of a family (mother, father, children) has remained the same. In the 1950 's the normal American family consisted of a breadwinner father, homemaker mother, and several children, all living in homes in the suburbs on the outskirts of a larger city. It was a narrow view of a model family, yet it saturated the media and was widely accepted as the ideal and most normal. Now a days, a family can be anything, form a single mother raising her boy, to a gay couple raising adopted children. The myth of the “Model Family” does not persist to this day because gender roles have changed allot since the 1950s, the involvement of technology and devices in the house, and children are now raised by a variety of caring adults.

    T. V Show: Full House Vs. Modern Family

Full House is the opening plot of three men raising three girls, and it thought to be totally innocuous, the classic show opened the door to conversations about same sex parents on a show. Now Full House paved the way for today’s show Modern Family. Modern Family might be the most progressive show in the past 50 years. Because it takes on all the awkward nontraditional American family elements and crams them into a comedy show. As I said with Full House it brought same sex parents together on a sitcom with Mitchell and Cameron as the gay couple with an adopted Asian baby. Jay and Gloria both provide the divorcees, and Claire and Phil are a strong woman with a very submissive husband and to add on that it is a very dysfunctional family. Basically the show embodies a rich but diverse definition of family held by contemporary
